Morar
As the Atlantic Ocean rolls in past the Small Isles, its azure shallows tumble onto sparkling white beaches which have long lured photographers and film-makers. None more so than the stretches from Arisaig Bay to the silver sands of Morar where 'Local Hero' and 'Highlander' were filmed |
The old road takes you past the rapids of River Morar, Britain's shortest river. |
The new road sweeps past Morar, but the wise traveller will find time to explore the village and Loch Morar which is the deepest fresh water loch in Europe. It is said that in its dark depths 'Morag' the monster patrols her domain. |
At the western end of the loch lies an island called Eilean Ban, site of the first seminary in Scotland in which young men were educated and prepared for the priesthood. This seminary, which was razed following the Jacobite Rebellion, assured Morar and Arisaig of their importance in the Catholic Church. While in the village of Morar, you should take the opportunity to visit the cross and viewpoint which affords panoramic views of the Inner Hebrides and Loch Morar. The cross was erected in 1899 to commemorate the opening of the present church. |
For something a little different while you're on holiday, why not order an authentic Thai take-away meal from Sunset in Morar? Place your order at any time and your meal will be ready for collection between 5pm and 10.30pm everyday except Mondays. This can be particularly handy if you are self catering in the area and don't want to cook for yourselves.
